Ambulatory Services

Ambulatory services at the Geraldton Hospital cover all those services that do not require a patient to be admitted into the hospital.

Emergency Department

Geraldton Hospital's Emergency Department is fully staffed and operational 24 hours per day 365 days a year and offers Emergency Nursing and Medical assessment and treatment of medical, surgical and trauma emergencies.  The department services the greater Geraldton area and is a resource for people of the Midwest Murchison region. Approximately 22,000 people are treated in the Department each year.

People presenting to the Emergency department are reviewed and treated in order of Medical Priority NOT in order of attendance.

 
There is a dedicated team of Medical Practitioners, Nurses, Clerical and Support Services staff at the Emergency Department. The department is a modern will equipped facility able to treat threatening illnesses (e.g. heart attacks) and major injuries(e.g. motor vehicle trauma).

Needle & Syringe Program

Geraldton Regional Hospital (GRH) offers a Needle & Syringe Program from the Emergency Department.  This service is available from 7.00 pm to 8.00 am daily.  The program is not an exchange program.  (We do not receive used injecting equipment in exchange for sterile supplies.) 

  • Fit packs are issued in a non-judgemental manner.
  • Clients are welcomed to seek medical or nursing advice and assessment. 
  • Referral to support agencies such as the COMPARI Midwest Community Drug Service Team and the WA Substance Abusers Association is available.
  • All effort will be made to provide supplies in as timely a manner as possible.
  • This may mean that from time to time clients will have to wait for their supplies.

Asthma Education

A trained Respiratory Nurse Educator is available to provide free support services to clients living in the Geraldton postal code.  Information is available in regard to:

  •  Managing Asthma & other Respiratory complaints such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  •  Use of inhaled medications/puffers and peak flow monitoring.
  •  Assistance with Home Oxygen Program needs.
  •  Provision of Asthma First Aid.

 This information can be obtained in a number of different ways, including:

  •  Individual or Family group consultations.
  •  In Hospital and Home visits, and,
  •  Provision of information Brochures.

Chemotherapy

The Chemotherapy Unit is located on the first floor of the hospital, and is staffed by specialty trained nurses, deemed competent in the administration of Chemotherapy, and the provision of care to clients and their families.   

The unit enables the administration of Chemotherapy drugs, blood transfusions and related treatments, education and support, within a comfortable, well-equipped and positive environment.

Haemodialysis

The Dialysis unit is open Monday to Sunday. Our main role is to provide haemodialysis for patient in the end Stages of Renal Failure.  Each patient comes for dialysis 3 times per week, for a minimum of 4 hours.  The length of treatment is individualised for each patient and is determined by the patients weight, size and effectiveness of the treatment. 

Services provided by the Dialysis staff include:

  •  Ongoing Patient education with regard to dietary and fluid requirements.
  •   Emotional support to both patients and their families.
  •   A safe, clean and comfortable environment for haemodialysis.
  •   Support and education for pre-renal patients in the region.
  •   Support for patients and their families in the provision of Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD)
      both in hospital and at home within the general community setting.

 Hospital at Home

The aim of the Hospital at Home service is to reduce time spent in hospital enabling your recovery to take place in the comfort of your own home.  The program is a free service available seven days a week, during which Registered Nurses commute to your home and provide treatment as appropriate, and will arrange your referral to Allied Health and other support services as needed or required. 

This service is available to clients living in the City of Geraldton and immediate surrounding suburbs.  The referral for treatment following discharge from hospital is made on consultation between you, hospital nursing staff and your Doctor.

A Doctors order is necessary for you to be eligible for this service.  Oxygen is classified as a medication that requires a prescription.  For more information please contact the Hospital at Home Service on (08) 9956 2349, the Asthma Educator on (08) 9956 1989 or your usual Doctor.  The GRH Hospital at Home coordinates the service, supply and support needs for all domiciliary oxygen clients.  A local contractor will deliver the oxygen to your home and collect empty cylinders as your needs require.   A nurse will visit soon after to ensure that you are using the oxygen correctly and will reassess your needs in another 4 – 6 weeks.
