Carnarvon is situated at the mouth of the Gascoyne River on which the town’s existence is reliant.  The river, which only flows at infrequent intervals, provides the underground water supply for industry and domestic use.  The area has a low annual rainfall and is situated in the cyclone belt.

Carnarvon was also the first port in Australia and probably the world, where stock was transported regularly on a commercial basis by sea.

Fishing and later whaling and prawning ventures were to add another facet to the primary industry side of life in the district.  The meatworks on Babbage Island Road, the freezing, and fish processing schemes may have been short-lived.

The Carnarvon Hospital is a 36 bed facility which provides Maternity, Permanent Care, Paediatrics, Respite Care, Palliative Care and General Care to the local community Gascoyne pastoral region including Shark Bay.  Care is also provided to the communities of Exmouth, Coral Bay and Burringurrah.
